By using Home Team you agree to these terms. They are short, and the part that matters most is the section on accuracy.
What Home Team is
Home Team is a free app that helps you find Canadian alternatives to U.S. products and shows which grocery chains carry them. It is an information service. It does not sell anything, take payment, or fulfil orders.
What our claims mean, and what they do not
Every claim in the app is one of three things, and each means something specific:
- Canadian-owned — the ultimate parent company is Canadian.
- Made in Canada — the product is manufactured in Canada.
- Canadian ingredients — the main ingredients are grown or raised here.
They are shown separately and never blended into a score, because a product can be made here by a foreign-owned company, or Canadian-owned and made abroad. Where we have not established a claim, the app says so rather than guessing.
Each claim is recorded against a source, and each is reviewed by a person before it appears. We still expect to be wrong sometimes. Ownership changes hands, production moves, and public records lag reality. Claims are our honest reading of the evidence available on the date shown, not a warranty.
Do not rely on Home Team for decisions where being wrong would be costly to you — a purchasing contract, a regulatory filing, a resale claim, or an allergy or dietary requirement. Check the package and the manufacturer.
Where to buy
"Carried at" and "chains within 15 km" describe which chains stock a product and roughly where their stores are. We do not track shelf-by-shelf inventory. A chain may carry a product nationally and not have it in the store you visit, and prices shown are approximate.
Store locations come from OpenStreetMap and are community-contributed, so coverage is better in cities than in small towns.
Telling us we are wrong
If a claim is out of date or incorrect, use "Something here is wrong". Reports go to the people who maintain the catalogue and are checked against the source. A claim changes when the evidence changes.
Do not send us anything confidential, and do not send anyone else's personal information.
Advertising
The app carries advertising, and every paid unit is labelled. Two commitments:
- Ranking is never for sale. Ownership, manufacturing and ingredients decide the order alternatives appear in. No advertiser can buy a higher position, and the top-ranked answer is never a paid placement.
- Advertisers do not receive information about you. See the Privacy Policy.
We do not sell ad slots to U.S. companies. For ads we sell directly, that is enforced and absolute. For ads filled automatically by Google's network we apply the strongest filtering the network offers — blocking categories and specific advertisers — but that filtering is not perfect and a U.S. advertiser may occasionally appear. We would rather tell you that than claim a guarantee we cannot keep.
Third-party content and links
Advertisements and store information may link to sites we do not run. We are not responsible for their content or their privacy practices.
Data we use
Product data comes in part from Open Food Facts, used under the Open Database Licence. Store locations come from OpenStreetMap, also under the Open Database Licence. Postal area coordinates come from GeoNames under CC BY 4.0. Trademark records come from the Canadian Intellectual Property Office.
Availability
The app is provided as it is. We do not promise it will always be available or error-free, and we may change or withdraw features.
Liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss arising from your use of the app, including from a claim that turns out to be inaccurate or a store that does not stock what we said it carries. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the applicable laws of Canada.
